The Summer Schools on Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (SAMMs) are organized by the GAMM Juniors, i.e. the representatives of young researchers within the organization of GAMM. The summer school is planned to take place in presence. If required due to potential travel restrictions, it may be realized as a hybrid or, if necessary, fully virtual event.


The summer school is planned to take place in a hybrid format. While we hope that the situation will allow us to welcome participants in Graz, following the lectures from home via Webex will be made possible.
If the situation requires it, the summer school can also be held as a fully virtual event.


The summer school addresses young researchers from mathematics and engineering who are already working in the field of design optimization or are interested in the field. It is primarily meant for PhD students, but also Master students or young PostDocs are very welcome. We encourage people from both mathematics and engineering to participate.


The lectures will cover the following topics:

  • Shape and Topological Sensitivity Analysis
  • Pattern Analysis in Shape Optimization
  • Material and Topology Optimization
  • Numerical Optimization Algorithms

The school consists of lectures and hands-on sessions (computer or pen-and-paper exercises).
